At the very end of last year, Tyne & Wear Fine Pud provider Beckleberry’s won the highly prized Growing Biz award (best family business) sponsored by Amazon & CBI (Confederation of British Industry) the pinnacle of SME awards that shines a light on the UK’s most outstanding entrepreneurs and high growth businesses.
Beckleberry’s isn’t a typical food business by any stretch of the imagination. This is noble, award-winning Northern food producer that makes an array of sublime/all-natural puds (Ice creams, sorbets and stylish puds) out of a converted ambulance station in Blaydon (Tyne & Wear).
This is a family business that began its journey back in 1996, initially as a discerning ice cream and pudding provider to a number of the nation’s top hotels and restaurants before quickly evolving into the ‘go-to’ provider of best-in-class desserts for the 1st /Business Class menus of British Airways, SAS and Norwegian Airlines (to name but a few).
2019 however was a step-change moment when Beckleberry’s came out of the clouds and on to the rails, teaming up with the 1st name in Great British trains, LNER (London North Eastern Railways) to provide an array of ‘rest of the day’ meal highlights (e.g. beetroot, goat’s cheese & caramelised onion savoury tart) and ‘plated desserts’ that are a lynch pin to LNER’s ‘evening meal dinners’ offer (treacle tarts, Chocolate Caramel Tart, Passion Fruit & Mango Slice….) and potted puds for LNER’s high speed Azuma service
According to Beckleberry’s spokesperson, Peter Craig ‘even for a business like ours that’s been producing top-notch puds since 1996 this has been a meteoric year. We’re a family business that’s used to winning awards – over 106 Great Taste awards and counting – however seeing dad collect a Growing Business trophy was incredible since it was his steely conviction to back my idea with his colliery redundancy funds that allowed Beckleberry’s to be born. We had a shared vision to build upon the North’s proud manufacturing prowess and become one of the nation’s foremost top tier pud providers, puddings that today criss-cross our island’s skies (airlines) and counties and (LNER) and even some export success in Spain & North America.
