Bakes and Balls celebrates winning a prestigious award for Best Chocolate at the 2019 Nourish Awards

A Sedbergh-based free from healthy treats company has won a prestigious award for its Fancy Frolic Gin and Lime Frocolate Truffles.

Bakes and Balls (which is in the process of rebranding as The Frocolate Truffle Company) were announced as the only winners in the Chocolate category at the 2019 Nourish Awards which celebrates and honours the best new generation health foods in the UK.

An awards gala was held at the Cheltenham Race Course in Gloucestershire to announce the 2019 Nourish Awards winners (September 12). The host for the evening was chef, nutritionist and author Naomi Devlin. Categories included best soup, best savoury bake, best raw and superfood and there were also awards for best ethical, best organic and the allimportant innovation award, for which Bakes and Balls was shortlisted last year.

Stephen Hall, Founder of Bakes and Balls and The Frocolate Truffle Company said: I am over the moon to have won this award. It’s been the culmination of a lot of hard work from a micro-business which is committed to creating healthy products which are nutritious and taste fantastic. It has been a tough year trying to launch new products; and deciding to leave the energy balls and snacks category to focus on launching the Frocolate Truffles. It’s humbling to be in the company of the other great nominees – many of which are also based in the North-West.”

The Fancy Frolic Frocolate Truffles, are the result of a collaboration with Shed 1 Gin of Ulverston. This was the only product to be awarded in the Chocolate category and was chosen by the judges, who said, “We love the taste, with the lime coming through nicely. Great ingredients too!”

Stephen continued, “Frocolate is a fruit-based chocolate. It is a unique combination of figs, dates and prunes with ethically produced Grand Cru Cocoa and Cocoa Butter from Madagascar. As well as being vegan, the truffles are free from the Top 14 Allergens. They have no added sugars, so the sweetness comes from the dried fruit, which also makes them high in fibre which is important for gut health.”

Diana Murphy, Founder of the Nourish Awards, said: “This year’s awards attracted the highest level of entries and the judges had a difficult job choosing the runners up and winners. All of the companies in the room are paving the way to offering better, healthy eating choices. We should celebrate with great pride those who are putting their stamp on the healthy food industry.”

The Frocolate Truffle Company is the new focus of Stephen Hall, who founded Bakes and Balls in January 2016 to produce the sort of healthy snacks he enjoyed making for his children’s lunch boxes. As the products developed he began to focus on addressing the nutritional needs of those with allergies and before long all the products became free from all the top 14 allergens, and then, after toying with the idea of using cricket-flour as a protein source, also became Vegan! Having spent 18 months trying to launch the Frocolate Spread that was shortlisted for two Nourish Awards last year, Stephen made the decision at the end of the summer to focus on developing the Truffles, and so The Frocolate Truffle Company was born.
