Middleton-based Icky Sticky Cake are embarking on a Crowdfunding mission which has much wider implications than just raising money.
The business is run by husband and wife run team Andrew and Keally George and was started after being faced with redundancy while teaching in the catering and hospitality industry at a local college.
Having traded for just over 4 years in local artisan markets and food festivals, the pair started small and invested heavily into their newly refurbished bespoke bakery. For the last 12 months they have leased their equipment and now have the opportunity to purchase it outright, which will help to expand their business.
The pair say that once they have purchased the necessary equipment, they are aiming to offer a paid job to a homeless person. Through tax breaks, they hope to provide accommodation, access to counselling (should it be required), registering with a GP and dentist and provide training for the role.
Andrew George is keen to stress that should the person wish to move on at any point they are welcome to do so, and as the business grows, they will look to take further homeless people on board for roles in our business.
